Marketing Conversion Rate Benchmarks by Channel (2026): What "Average" Is Actually Worth

November 04, 2026•5 min read

The average B2B conversion rate runs from about 0.3% for direct mail to 3.9% for account-based marketing, according to First Page Sage's 2026 benchmarks. SEO converts at 2.7%, email at 2.4% and paid search at 1.5%.

Those numbers are useful. But a benchmark on its own doesn't tell you much. The real question is what it's worth to your business if you hit it, or what you're losing if you don't.

B2B conversion rates by marketing channel

Here's how the major B2B channels compare. A conversion here means a form fill, a reply to a sales or marketing email, a purchase, or a demo or trial signup.

A few things stand out. The channels that convert best for B2B (ABM, speaking, SEO) all start with a clear sense of who you're targeting. Paid social converts poorly for B2B, even though it works well for consumer brands. And trade shows, a budget staple for a lot of B2B companies, sit near the bottom.

The new channel: AI search

Visitors who arrive from AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude convert at a much higher rate than visitors from Google.

In First Page Sage's 2026 client data, ChatGPT referrals converted to leads at 4.8%, compared with 1.9% for Google organic search. Those leads also closed at a higher rate. The result was about 10 customers per 1,000 ChatGPT visitors, against fewer than 3 per 1,000 from Google.

The reason is simple. By the time someone clicks through from an AI answer, they've already asked their questions and narrowed their options. They arrive ready to act.

AI referrals are still a small share of most websites' traffic, but that share is growing quickly. If you aren't tracking AI traffic as its own channel in your analytics, start now.

Paid search: why you'll see very different numbers

If you search for Google Ads benchmarks, you'll find much higher figures. WordStream's 2026 benchmarks put the average Google Ads conversion rate at 8.18%. For business services, it's 4.85%, at an average cost per lead of $93.69.

Both numbers are right. They just measure different things. Ad platform benchmarks count conversions per ad click, often including phone calls and minor actions. Channel benchmarks like the table above use a stricter definition of a lead.

The lesson: before you compare your results to any benchmark, check what counts as a conversion. Comparing your qualified-lead rate to a platform's click-conversion rate will make you look worse than you are.

Turning a benchmark into a revenue number

Here's where most benchmark articles stop. But knowing that SEO converts at 1.9% doesn't help you make a decision. Knowing what that gap is worth does.

Take a B2B company with these numbers:

• 5,000 organic search visitors a month

• Average customer value: $12,000

• Lead-to-customer rate: 13.6% (the benchmark for Google organic leads)

At the benchmark (1.9% visitor-to-lead): 95 leads, about 13 new customers, roughly $155,000 in monthly revenue.

At 1.2% visitor-to-lead: 60 leads, about 8 new customers, roughly $98,000 in monthly revenue.

That gap is $57,000 a month, or close to $700,000 a year, from one channel. Suddenly "we're a bit below average" becomes a business case for fixing your landing pages.

The same math tells you where to put the next dollar. If your visitor-to-lead rate is fine but your lead-to-customer rate is half the benchmark, more traffic won't help. Your problem is in sales follow-up or lead quality.

How to use benchmarks well

• Match the definition. Compare like with like: leads to leads, trials to trials.

• Benchmark your industry, not the average. Rates vary widely between sectors. Legal services and healthcare convert far better than engineering or enterprise software.

• Look at every stage. A channel with a low top-of-funnel rate can still produce more customers if its leads close well.

• Use them as a starting point. Once you have six months of your own data, your numbers become the benchmark to beat.
